Joanna and Kyle met in the ninth grade while attending Choctawhatchee High School in their hometown of Fort Walton Beach, Florida. While in high school, Joanna and Kyle were both students in the International Baccalaureate Programme and shared classes together for years. During their junior and senior years, in particular, they became close friends and attended their senior homecoming dance together.
After graduating high school in 2005, Joanna left for Gainesville and the University of Florida while Kyle went north to attend Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. During their years away at school, they remained in touch; visiting with friends while home on holiday and visiting each other at their respective schools for the Vanderbilt/UF football game in 2007 and 2008 (these were, unfortunately, decidedly one-sided). Both Joanna and Kyle were active members of the campus community – Kyle served as president of his fraternity, Phi Delta Theta and was an elected representative to the Vanderbilt Student Government while Joanna served as the Philanthropy Chair of Alpha Omicron Pi at Florida, helping to organize campus-wide events including Dance Marathon and Mr. UF.
In 2009, Kyle graduated from Vanderbilt with a bachelor of arts degree having double-majored in Political Science and Philosophy with a minor in European History while Joanna graduated with a bachelor of science degree in Recreation, Parks and Tourism with a specialization in Event Management. Joanna and Kyle both relocated back to Fort Walton Beach after graduation and quickly resumed their close friendship while reconnecting with other friends who had returned to the local area.
It wasn’t long before Joanna and Kyle realized that their feelings for one another had deepened beyond friendship; by the beginning of the new year in 2010, they were dating. Adjusting to life after college, travelling, going out with friends and to dinner or staying in to watch a movie on Netflix – before they knew it they had been together for nearly a year.
Towards the end of 2010, Joanna left for Jacksonville, Florida to pursue career advancement opportunities as an event coordinator with the American Culinary Federation while Kyle stayed in Fort Walton Beach. They visited each other as often as possible, both in Jacksonville and Fort Walton Beach and -after another year had passed – Joanna moved back to Fort Walton. She is currently employed by the Emerald Coast Convention Center as their Sales & Marketing Coordinator while Kyle works for Southern Ventures Corporation as the IT Director.
Having realized a few scant months into their relationship (and perhaps even years before…) that she was the one for him, Kyle proposed on August 4, 2012 at Bellingrath Gardens in Mobile, Alabama with a ring he had custom made for her. He likes to think that he surprised her that afternoon, but evidence suggests that he might have made it painfully obvious… Afterwards, they were joined by all of their immediate family members for a celebratory dinner at one of Joanna and Kyle’s favorite restaurants, Crab Island Cantina in Destin, Florida.
Joanna and Kyle cannot wait to be married and to share their day with their friends and family!
